Assignment Writing: Assignment Submission

This guide will help you plan, research and write your written assignments.

Turnitin is the platform Whitireia and WelTec for submitting assignments. This guide introduces you to Turnitin and shows you how to upload your assignment and how to interpret the reports.

What is Turnitin?

Turnitin is a text-matching software that is used to check for originality of work.

  • Most of the summative written assessments are submitted via Turnitin. You're encouraged to submit your assignment more than once.
  • Every time you submit your assignment to Turnitin you'll receive a report that gives you plagiarism percentages.
  • When your tutor marks your assignment, they'll add feedback which highlights what you have done well and areas for improvement. This feedback is essential in helping you build strong writing skills, so always take time to carefully work through the feedback.

Submitting your assignment

Six Steps to Submitting in Turnitin
1. Open up Turnitin and find your Turnitin Assignment Dropbox in Moodle
2. Under the My Submissions tab, click the button that says Submit Paper (on bottom right slide).

3. Type in your submission title.

Next, Drag and Drop your file into the Submission area OR click the Add icon to open the File Picker.

4. Once the File Picker window opens, select Upload a File from the side menu and then click the Choose File button.

Locate your file on your computer or USB drive and either double-click it OR click the Open button to select the file.

Click the Upload this file button (bottom of screen) to add the file to the Submission area.

5. The file should now display in the Submission area
6. Tick the check box to confirm that this is your own work and then click the Add Submission button to submit your file

Once you've submitted:

  • You should see this message under your submitted file: Status: Submission successfully uploaded to Turnitin.
  • An email will be sent to confirm your submission was uploaded successfully.
  • The first time you submit the file it will take 5 – 10 minutes for your Similarity percentage to display, until then it will show ‘Pending’.
  • If this is a resubmission it can take 24 hours for your Similarity percentage to display
