Proquest eBook Central: Read Online

Book Details Page

When you select a book, you will be taken to a page like the below:

Availability - shows how many copies of the book the library owns. It will also show if they are in use or available to loan.

Book Details - shows bibliographic information. This is useful for when you're doing your referencing.

Read Online - allows you to check the book out for up to 21 days. 

Download Book - allows you to download a pdf or ePub copy of the book. Access to this is allowed for up to 21 days. 

Table of Contents - provides a direct link to a specific chapter. This can also be used to get a better idea of what the book will cover.

Online Reading

When reading online, ProQuest provides options for interacting with the book.

Along the top of the page, you will find a selection of icons:

Full Download - allows you to download the book and therefore access offline. Access lasts for 21 days.

Chapter Download - allows you to download the chapter you are reading in a PDF format.

Copy - allows you to select and copy specific sentences or paragraphs to then paste into a document.

Print to PDF - allows you to download specific pages in a PDF format.

Add to Bookshelf - adds the book to your bookshelf. Helps you keep track of your current loans and downloads.

Share Link - provides a page-specific link you can use either as a reference for yourself or to share with classmates.

Get Citation - Select APA format style and add to your reference list. Note, the citation is machine generated. Check it against the APA Referencing guide. 

When reading online, there is also the search function:

The search function found on the left-hand side of the page, gives you the option to search for key words and phrases within the book. 

It will indicate the frequency in which the word or phrase is used per chapter, as well as providing a direct link to take you to the page(s) where the word or phrase is used.

Accessibility

OpenDyslexic is a typeface designed to alleviate some common symptoms of dyslexia. Go to Settings --> Profile and tick the 'Enable OpenDyslexic typeface' box and save changes to apply this typeface to all pages of ProQuest eBook Central.

 

ProQuest eBook Central is compatible with the following browsers and screen reader tools. 

  • When using a desktop:
    • Chrome or Internet Explorer 11 + JAWS
    • Firefox + NVDA
    • Safari + VoiceOver.
  • When using Apple Mobile: 
    • Safari + VoiceOver
  • When using Android Mobile:
    • Chrome + Talkback

It is recommended that when using one of these screen readers, you change the settings to Text only mode. Go to Settings --> Profile, and tick the 'Enable Text Only Mode' box and save changes 

 

The magnification function allows you to zoom in up to 300%. When reading online, the eBooks are reflowable, which means when you change the size of the font, the book will rearrange itself to fit your screen.
